Fatima's Story:

At just thirteen years old, Fatima’s peaceful world was shattered by the sudden outbreak of war. The conflict led to the tragic loss of her mother and forced her family to flee. They moved from one place to another - first to Wad Madani, then to Northern State, and finally to Port Sudan. As she navigated these turbulent changes, a heavy sorrow took root within her. She struggled to find herself amidst the trauma and became withdrawn, isolated in her grief.
But Fatima’s life began to change when she found her way to a Safe Learning Space in Port Sudan, a place designed to offer psychosocial support for children just like her. With support from UNICEF Sudan, 30 of these safe learning spaces were established by LM International through a project that ended in 2025. In this space, Fatima discovered that healing was not just a distant hope but a real possibility.
With the help of structured psychosocial activities, group counseling sessions, and creative outlets like art and play, Fatima began to open up. The caring environment provided her with stability, something she hadn’t experienced in a long time. The support from the teachers and mentors allowed Fatima to slowly rebuild herself. She became an active participant in the community, engaging with other children and encouraging them to embrace their healing journey.
Fatima is now attending formal school and has been excelling in her studies. Her story gives us hope for the countless others just like her, hope that healing is possible when children are given the right tools and a safe, supportive environment.
