Fatima's story: what a safe learning space can hold
At just thirteen years old, Fatima's peaceful world was shattered by the sudden outbreak of war. The conflict led to the loss of her mother and forced her family to flee. They moved from one place to another, first to Wad Madani, then to Northern State, and finally to Port Sudan. As she navigated these changes, a heavy sorrow took root. She struggled to find herself amid the trauma, and became withdrawn, isolated in her grief.
Fatima's life began to change when she found her way to a Safe Learning Space in Port Sudan, a place designed to offer psychosocial support to children exactly like her. With support from UNICEF Sudan, thirty of these spaces were established by LM International through a project that ended in 2025. In this one, Fatima discovered that healing was not a distant hope but a real possibility.
Structured psychosocial activities, group counselling, and creative outlets like art and play. Slowly, Fatima began to open up.
The caring environment gave her stability, something she had not experienced in a long time. The support of teachers and mentors let her rebuild herself piece by piece. She became an active participant in the community, engaging with other children and encouraging them to begin their own healing.
Fatima now attends formal school and is excelling in her studies. Her story gives hope for the countless others like her: that healing is possible when children are given the right tools and a safe, supportive environment.
