Kenya's 2026/27 basic education budget: the numbers behind the rhetoric

Analysis of Kenya's FY2026/2027 approved allocations reveals significant gaps between policy ambition and financial backing. Approved funding fell KSh 4.46 billion below the State Department for Basic Education's requested budget, and KSh 34.38 billion below what the Teachers Service Commission requested.

The deepest cuts affect primary education capitation, the national school feeding programme, and specialised educator postings for Special Needs Education (SNE) units in public schools.
