The Teaching at the Right Level (TaRL) Junior Secondary School pilot in Kaduna State, Nigeria, tested targeted, competency-based instruction to help adolescents who had not yet mastered foundational literacy and numeracy skills. Implemented across five public schools with support from UNICEF Nigeria, the pilot showed progress in English and numeracy while highlighting the importance of protected instructional time, teacher coaching, appropriate learning materials and strong school leadership.
